All the Mariannes sleep peacefully at the Shack . Except for Red.
Night after night, Red battles insomnia at the Jetty Shack. While the other Mariannes rest and restore, Red thrashes around in her sleeping pod, knocking against the five wooden walls. Tucked inside the sleeping berth she twists in her hot, red bedding, plagued with agitation and sadness from the deep cut of being wounded over and over in the same place. She is forced to sleep this bothered way because her instinct is disgruntled, her spirit misaligned. She has aching dreams of a mother whale crying songs of despair echoing deep in the ocean. The chorus feels like wailing from a female humpback's despair. The whale’s call is Red’s own subconscious singing out in agony. It gets louder throughout the night until it's a deafening ring.
The sound waves from Red’s wailing spills from the Jetty Shack windows into the bay. They travel over the water, across the bay in every direction towards the horizon, all through the night.
In daylight, a healer visits the Jetty Shack after hearing the song in the bay overnight. He counsels Red that the whale’s song is of significance. He encourages her to search for the meaning and connection to the song. The healer reaches into his tote bag and gifts Red a pottery whale. He tells her that she can blow into the mouth of the whale softly. When the air hits the blowhole of the whale it works as a flute whistle. Red’s subconscious does not need to wail anymore, she can use the whale whistle instead. The healer can be overheard, saying in an Irish accent, “Essentially, you’ll be healing yourself”.

Australia was the first country, worldwide, to approve the use of psilocybin, commonly known as Magic Mushrooms, as medicine against treatment resistant depression. In 2023 the Therapeutic Goods Administration changed the status of the drug from ‘prohibited’ to ‘controlled’.
Hundreds of species of psilocybin fungi turn blue when they are cut with a knife. When they are bruised also a dark blue pigment, like indigo, appears. Some species of psilocybin mushrooms instantly develop a blue coloration after being bruised or cut. Others take hours for the blue to develop.

After jungle bashing alone, Red and Beads find the cave. They pick out the wall crystals that are inside and take them back to the Jetty Shack. The crystals were crafted into this formation by the humans that lived there before. This type of pottery is still a practice of survival today. In modern times art remains in every human culture that ever lived. The spirit of creativity is in our survival instinct. An artisan’s drive to create can return after adversity, again, and again. Artisanship is a ‘way of life’.

In the 1970’s maverick scientist Alexander Shulgin synthesised MDMA and noticed it’s ‘special effect’. Alexander’s wife, Ann Shulgin, worked as a therapist with psychedelic substances, such as MDMA, before they became illegal in the mid 1980’s.
Before the prohibition the Shulgins administered MDMA to patients in conjunction with psychotherapy. The couple introduced MDMA to other psychotherapists.
The drug was used recreationally by party goers in the 70’s and 80’s. The street name for MDMA is ‘ecstasy’ or ‘molly’.
In 2023 the prohibition for MDMA was changed in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration from ‘prohibited’ to ‘controlled’, a world first. Approved Psychiatrists in Australia can prescribe MDMA assisted psychotherapy to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

In recognition of this fact the white Villagers volunteer for the Indigenous population twice a month for a full day. They receive instruction from the Indigenous elders on exactly how to help. (It is not the white Villagers who decide what help is needed). Tasks the white Villagers are given, by the Indigenous elders, include playing cricket with Indigenous youth, learning Indigenous language and helping to restore biodiversity on country that has been damaged throughout history.
